Have you ever suffered from adult acne? June is National Acne Month, and a big misconception about acne is that it only happens in adolescence. According to the American Academy of Dermatology Association, adult acne is increasing, affecting up to 15 percent of women.
Acne is Treatable
Acne may be annoying, but the good news is that it’s treatable! For tips on how to treat it, we spoke to Tiara Calhoun-Smith, one of the best estheticians in Dallas, Texas and the owner of Sugar Suite Lounge. Tiara is a licensed esthetician who also owns an esthetician training school, Sugar Suite Lounge Institute. She believes that investing in your skin is an investment that lasts a lifetime. Here are Tiara’s tips for men and women suffering from adult acne.
Skin Care Regiment
Consistency is key when it comes to skin care, according to Tiara. She suggests using the same products consistently to see positive results for your skin. Introducing a new skin care product can send your skin into a frenzy, so try not to incorporate too many new products at once. The products that Tiara suggests to her acne prone clients? “Benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, niacinamide, and vitamin C and E are great ingredients that help with acne.” But remember to give your skin a chance to become accustomed to something new.
Diet Affects Your Skin
“What goes into your body will eventually come out of your body,” says Tiara. Diet is another factor that can contribute to adult acne. For instance, if you eat a lot of dairy or consume coffee regularly, those may be causing your skin to develop acne. Slowly replace food items in your diet and observe how your skin reacts. Keeping a list of what you eat and how your skin responds may help you discover the root of your acne problem. You may find that replacing one food item with another makes a huge difference for your skin.
Hormones & Stress Affect Acne
Hormonal changes are common contributing factors of acne. “A lot of adults experience acne in their 30s and 40s because of hormonal changes they may not be aware of,” says Tiara. The older you become, the more your body changes. This may be why someone that had clear skin their entire life can develop acne for the first time in their adult years. Stress is another common factor of acne, but a few self-care tricks can help with that! Try using an anti-stress facial mask, applying your skin care routine with a jade roller, or lighting candles when you arrive home from a long day. These simple tasks can bring peace and tranquility to your life. And hopefully, reduce your stress and your acne.
Wash Your Face
This seems obvious, but according to Tiara, she often has to remind her clients to keep their faces clean. “I tell my clients to wash their face every time they sweat,” says Tiara. So that means you should wash your face after tasks such as working out, doing heavy lifting, or being in the sun for a long time. You should also be aware of how often you touch your face! Bacteria can easily build up on our faces from our hands. Think of the amount of things your hands touch daily and ask yourself, would you want any of those items touching your face?
Find an Esthetician
Finding a trusted esthetician can be a process, but it’s worth the results! Pay attention to what they specialize in and make sure they’re a good fit for you and your needs. “I became popular because I specialized in skin care for men and women of color,” explains Tiara. It takes about 28 days for skin cells to turn over, so she suggests seeing an esthetician every 3 weeks and staying consistent. Your skin is sure to see positive results!
Remember, investing in your skin is an investment that lasts a lifetime!
